Attending Brisbane Courthouse

Practical details for your day at Brisbane Magistrates Court, whether it’s your first appearance or a hearing.

Getting there and on the day

  • The courthouse is a few minutes’ walk from Roma Street station.
  • Arrive early so you have time to get through security and find your courtroom before your matter is called.
  • If Eric is representing you, he will tell you beforehand whether you need to attend and where to meet him on the day.

Getting through security

  • Most courts have airport-style security at the entrance. You put your belongings through a scanner and walk through a metal detector, and you may be asked to remove a face covering so you can be identified.
  • Firearms, knives and other weapons aren’t allowed. Tools, scissors and other sharp objects, glass bottles and motorbike helmets are held by security and returned when you leave.
  • Alcohol isn’t allowed on court premises, and you can’t smoke there.
  • Follow the directions of the security officers, and allow extra time for the security queue.

What to wear and how to act in court

  • You don’t need a suit, but dress neatly. Avoid thongs, singlets and clothing with offensive slogans, and take off your hat and sunglasses.
  • Stand when the magistrate enters or leaves the courtroom, and address the magistrate as “Your Honour”.
  • Speak clearly and respectfully, and don’t interrupt anyone while they are speaking.
  • Switch your mobile phone off before you go into the courtroom, and don’t eat or drink in court apart from water.
  • Taking photos, filming or recording in the courtroom or public areas of the court is not allowed without the court’s permission.

Heavy Vehicle and NHVR Defence in South East Queensland

Brisbane is the centre of South East Queensland’s freight network, with the Port of Brisbane, the Gateway Motorway and the Bruce, Warrego, Cunningham and Pacific highways all feeding heavy vehicles into and out of the city. The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is headquartered in Brisbane, and transport operators, depots and drivers here deal with it through roadside checks, audits, notices and investigations.

When one of those matters goes to court, it is often heard at Brisbane Magistrates Court. Heavy vehicle and NHVR matters are the core of Eric’s practice. Eric defends transport businesses, directors and drivers at Brisbane Magistrates Court and courts across NSW and Queensland.

Many NHVR matters are won or lost before court – at the first response, the first request for information and the first strategic decision. Speak with Eric before you respond.

Speak With Eric Before You Respond

The first few days of an NHVR matter often shape everything that follows. Businesses and drivers commonly provide more information than a notice legally requires, and that information can later be used as evidence.

Having worked inside the NHVR, Eric understands what investigators look for, how evidence is assessed, when matters escalate and how prosecution cases are prepared.
